Marriage Preparation Programme

It is every couple’s desire that their marriage will be fulfilling and life-long. However a good and sustaining marriage does not just happen, it needs preparation and effort. Marriage preparation programmes will help you understand issues relating to marriage and learn skills that help prepare for life together as husband and wife.

TOUCH Family Services is endorsed by the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) to conduct marriage preparation courses. Our curriculum are both evidence-based and research-informed and the interactive workshops are facilitated by our dynamic team of experienced instructors.

Group Marriage Preparation Programme (for couples aged above 21)

TOUCH Marriage Preparation Programme (MPP) aims to help couples lay the foundation for their marriage. Conducted by a husband-and-wife-team. We conduct MPP either in the home of the instructors or in our office at Kallang.

Our Programme will cover these topics:

  • Family of origin
  • Roles, responsibilities and expectations
  • Communication and conflict resolution
  • Sexual intimacy
  • Financial planning
  • In-law relationship

This workshop utilizes the PREPARE/ENRICH Inventory which encompasses a customized couple assessment to be completed online prior to the workshop. The questionnaires are based on research and are intended to help you identify the unique strengths and potential growth areas of your premarital or married relationship. A trained facilitator will provide feedback and help you understand and discuss the results. You will also learn some tips on how to improve your relationship skills.

Fees: S$330/- per couple, inclusive of 7% GST ($70 rebate* after completion of programme).

Individual Marriage Preparation Programme (for couples aged above 21)

Individual sessions provide the flexibility to focus more on specific needs of the couple. It is conducted over 1 or 2 sessions (8 hours) in our office.

Fees: S$450/- per couple, inclusive of 7% GST ($70 rebate* after completion of programme).

Prevention and Relationship Enhancement Programme (PREP) 12-hour Workshop
(for couples aged above 21)

PREP is an evidence-based marriage and relationship education programme offered by the Ministry. It is designed based on over 30 years of research in US that aims to help soon-to-wed and newly-wed couples to:

  • Improve communication and problem-solving skills
  • Attain higher relationship satisfaction; and
  • Develop better conflict resolution skills

Research has shown that couples who attended PREP have higher levels of positive communication and interaction and greater confidence in the future of their marriages.

The PREP workshop provides deeper coverage on a range of topics such as communication, conflict resolution and problem-solving. Couples also have opportunities during the workshop to reflect on their relationship and learn skills to enrich their marriage.

Fees: S$420/- per couple, inclusive of 7% GST ($140 rebate* upon completion of the programme)

Marriage Preparation Programme for Minors - Early Marriage Support (EMS) Programme

To help minor couples better prepare for marriage, they are required to attend a marriage preparation programme before they can be issued with a marriage licence. This is in addition to obtaining parental consent. Currently, the requirement applies where one or both of the marrying parties are Singapore Citizens or Permanent Residents; and

  • Where at least one party is below 18 years old; or
  • Where both parties are aged 18 years and above but below 21 years old

Effective for couples marrying on and after 1 October 2016, the above requirement will apply where one or both of the marrying parties are Singapore Citizens or Permanent Residents; and

  • Where at least one party is below 18 years old; or
  • Where at least one party is aged 18 years and above but below 21 years old

Note: Age is at the day of solemnisation.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. What is Early Marriage Support (EMS) Programme?

EMS is a marriage preparation and support programme which prepares young couples for a healthy and enriching marriage and family life. They help couples understand each other better, and provide practical skills to build a strong marriage. Some of the topics covered include communication and conflict resolution, in-law relationship, financial literacy and management, family planning, managing roles and expectations.

The EMS programme comprises:

  • One-to-one sessions with a consultant (2 sessions of 2hrs each)
  • Group marriage education workshop (4 sessions of 4hrs each)
  • Post-marriage peer support sessions (4 sessions of 2hrs each)

Minor couples are required to complete the one-to-one sessions and the group marriage education workshop before they can proceed to file a notice of marriage. TOUCH Family Services will issue a certificate of attendance that minor couples have to bring along when they visit the Registry of Marriages (ROM) for verification of documents.

2. What is the expected time needed for signing up and completing EMS?

It takes about 4 to 6 weeks for couples to complete the one-to-one sessions and group marriage education workshop. The post-marriage peer support sessions should be completed within the couple’s first year of marriage.

Couples are advised to register with TOUCH Family Services early for the EMS programme to avoid delaying their marriage.

3. Do couples have to pay to attend EMS?

No, couples do not have to pay to attend the EMS programme.
