Introducing the Heart of Community Fund

TOUCH Community Services is launching the Heart of Community Fund – a dedicated fund that brings hope, care, and support to individuals and families who need it most. Every gift to this fund helps sustain and grow TOUCH’s programmes and services across Singapore.

The Heart of Community Fund aims to support some 216,000 individuals in our care, including 13,322 seniors, 5,496 caregivers, 1,905 persons with special needs and their families, and 48,899 children, youths, parents and educators. Funds from The Heart of Community Fund will also support outreach programmes that promote cyber wellness and mental health, reaching over 109,000 individuals in the community.

Your support means more than resources, it means dignity, belonging, and hope to those struggling individuals and families in our care. By standing with us, you help build a community where the vulnerable are seen, heard, and uplifted.

Turning Challenges into Courage

For a single mother like Mdm Shan Shan, your support created a brighter tomorrow for her and her family.

As a single mother of four, Mdm Shan Shan juggled part-time jobs and emotionally taxing hours as a bus attendant, earning just $400 a month and struggling to make ends meet. Worrying about monthly expenses and missing her children’s milestones, she expressed a powerful desire: “I want to provide for my children on my own. I’m both the mother and father to my children. I want to be around to watch them grow up. I have already missed a lot of their milestones, and I don’t want to miss anymore.”

Joining TOUCH’s Project 1,2,3! (P123) marked a turning point for Mdm Shan Shan in 2022. With the support of a job coach and social worker, she attended self-discovery workshops, improved her English skills, and regained confidence. Today, she holds a permanent position at a printing company with regular hours. Her new role tripled her income, giving her financial stability, the ability to support her children independently, and precious time with them that she feared she’d never reclaim.

With my current salary, I have enough money to help pay some bills and buy necessities for our home. I also have enough to buy things for my children,” she shares with a smile.

Turning Fear into Empowerment

For Mdm Chew Oh Shuan and her son, Eugene, your support not only transformed their lives, it also inspired growth and relationships.

For 69-year-old Mdm Chew Oh Shuan, simple outings with her son, Eugene, were once laced with constant worry. Eugene has congenital deformities and intellectual disability, which results in balance issues and unpredictable falls that left Mdm Chew anxious and fearful about his safety. That was until Eugene enrolled at TOUCH Centre for Independent Living (TCIL) in 1996, where lifeskills coaches helped him to gradually gain independence in performing daily tasks.

As Eugene’s sole caregiver, Mdm Chew wanted to better understand more about what her son was learning and experiencing at the centre. Her journey took a meaningful turn when she participated in a leather-crafting workshop for caregivers in 2022. This opportunity not only helped her understand Eugene better but also opened a door to new possibilities for Mdm Chew.

What began as curiosity soon blossomed into passion as she volunteered to help trainees gain confidence and new skills. “I’ve felt very happy and fulfilled since I started volunteering. During my time volunteering, I’ve discovered that they (persons with disabilities) are more capable than we think. They can be empowered if they are given the chance,” she shares.

Today, Mdm Chew spends two days a week at the centre and even leads Meals-on-Wheels sessions, accompanied by Eugene and the trainees, delivering meals to homebound seniors. Through this shared act of giving, she not only enriched her own life, but deepened her bond with her son and the trainees she supports.

Mdm Chew’s story is a beautiful reminder that when people are given support and opportunities, even the most fearful beginnings can blossom into powerful stories of resilience, connection, and hope.

Every story of change begins with someone who cares. By supporting the Heart of Community Fund, you give children, youth, families, seniors, caregivers, and individuals with special or wellness needs the chance to rise above their challenges and write new chapters of strength and hope.

Join us in transforming worry into confidence, challenges into resilience, and isolation into community.
