Balancing Life’s Commitments as a Caregiver masthead

Balancing life’s commitments while caring for a loved one is not an easy feat, especially when the bulk of your time is dedicated to caregiving. Juggling medical appointments, meeting your care recipient’s needs, family time and work deadlines – It feels like a precarious tilt on a balancing scale where your own goals and obligations inevitably take a backseat.

While the struggle is real, finding a sustainable balance is essential. We cannot pour from an empty cup; if we neglect our needs, we won’t have enough capacity to care for the people we need to care for.

TIPS TO BALANCING LIFE’S COMMITMENTS AS A CAREGIVER

With the right balance, caregivers can show up fully for themselves and their loved ones. The following strategies may help caregivers.

  • Create a structured routine: By establishing a structured routine, you gain the flexibility to navigate caregiving duties without feeling scattered and with greater ease. Begin by mapping out essential tasks, such as professional and personal commitments, as well as a list of caregiving tasks [1].
  • Make use of the benefits: Keep an open line of communication with your employer regarding your needs and caregiving arrangements. Understand the workplace benefits you’re eligible for, such as hybrid working arrangements and family care leave [2].
  • Set boundaries: It is essential that you recognise your capacity and establish firm boundaries [2]. Others may not fully grasp the weight of caregiving, so communicate your boundaries clearly and learn to say ‘no’ to things or requests beyond your limits.
  • Carve out time for yourself: Often, caregivers are guilty when they are not caregiving yet exhausted when they are. To prevent burnouts, schedule regular breaks and engage in activities that bring you joy [1]. When you take care of yourself, you have more to give to the people around you.
  • Delegate your tasks: Whenever possible, share your caregiving responsibilities with family members or friends who are willing and able to support you. Consider hiring a professional caregiver for specific tasks to lighten your load [1].
  • Seek professional help: The caregiving journey can feel arduous as you strive to balance numerous responsibilities. If the load ever feels too overwhelming, it could be time to seek professional help. TOUCH Care Line by TOUCH Caregiving Support is a helpline for all caregiving-related matters. Its trained Care Coordinators offer a listening ear to caregivers, brainstorm and provide practical care solutions, and are able to refer caregivers or their care recipients to further resources and support in the community. You may call the TOUCH Care Line at 6804 6555 (Mondays to Fridays, 9am to 5pm) to speak with a Care Coordinator. You can also find out more about caregiving and caregiver-related support and services here.
